Navel oranges from California are probably the best eating oranges in the world. The navel is a seedless orange, oval with thick, easy-to-remove peel and segments that separate cleanly. Though not normally used as a juice orange, the Navel can be juiced, but the juice must be used immediately or it will become bitter. Florida oranges are sweeter due to the humidity in which it is grown, but California oranges produce a more attractive fruit with higher acidity.
Look for oranges that have a shiny skin and free of any blemishes. The orange should be heavy for its size, which indicates whether or not it is full of juice. Avoid ones with a large looking navel, as this shows that it was overripe when picked. Store oranges in a cool, dry place, and enjoy within a few days of bringing them home. They can be placed in a plastic bag or in the vegetable crisper of the refrigerator to extend the ripeness.

There are many different flavors that pair well with oranges, including: cinnamon, mint, sherry vinegar, orange liqueurs, chocolate and almond. They’re also a great fruit to eat right out of hand!
